like post-modernity and the rest. Instead, we have to look again at the nature of modernity itself which, for certain fairly specific reasons, has been poorly grasped in the so- cial sciences hitherto. Rather than entering a period of post-modernity, we are moving into one in which the con- sequences of modernity are becoming more radicalised

Much of his theoretical writing deals with stratification, class, and modernity. Giddens, Anthony: Modernity and self-identity. 1994-06-01 Anthony Giddens Modernity is inherently globalizing -- this is evident in some of the most basic characteristics of modern institutions, including particularly their disembeddedness and reflexivity. But what exactly is globalization, and how might we best conceptualize the phenomenon? In The Consequences of Modernity (1990), Anthony Giddens offers an analysis of our times, which he hopes will diffuse the Dionysian celebrations of the post-age and the exaltations of postmodernism in social theory. Giddens argues that the character of contemporary Anthony Giddens, Baron Giddens MAE (born 18 January 1938) is an English sociologist who is known for his theory of structuration and his holistic view of modern societies. He is considered to be one of the most prominent modern sociologists and the author of at least 34 books, published in at least 29 languages, issuing on average more than one book every year.

In Sequestration of Experience, Anthony Giddens discusses the rise of individual identity as a result of modernity—in which the individual is tied to his or her own sense of self (and the things that reaffirm this selfhood) rather than a pre-modern sense of continuity with a cohesive, generational society and a natural world (Giddens 144-145). Giddens shares many of these themes with contemporary sociological theorists such as Habermas, Touraine and Melucci. These authors attempt to grasp the distinctive culture of late modernity that is fragile, ever-changing and different from that which preceded it.
